Firefighters from eight towns battled a large brush and woods fire at the 145-acre Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary in Freeport on Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to Freeport, firefighters from North Yarmouth, Cumberland, Pownal, Durham, Yarmouth, Brunswick and Falmouth responded to the fire. It was eventually brought under control early Tuesday evening, but the extent of the damage caused by the fire was not known.
The sanctuary is located on Upper Mast Landing Road, which is east of downtown off Flying Point Road. It is located along the Harraseeket River estuary with more than three miles of trails that wind along a stream and tidal marsh, and through an orchard, fields and forest.
The preserve, which is located one mile from downtown Freeport, is a popular area for hikers and birders.
