A crash in Gray Saturday night sent an 18-year-old driver from New Gloucester to the hospital.

Zachary Spurling was transported to Maine Medical Center with serious injuries, while the other driver, Maureen Smith, 66, of Westbrook, was treated and released at the crash scene, Captain Kerry Joyce said Sunday in a statement.

Deputies received a report of a crash in the area of West Gray Road and Pleasant View Drive around 8:35 p.m. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found that Spurling’s vehicle was in a ditch.

Officials said the crash happened when Spurling, who was driving a 2007 Cadillac, lost control of the car, crossing into the center lane and crashed into Smith’s Subaru Crosstrek. Then Spurling’s vehicle went airborne, continued into a ditch and hit a culvert, Joyce said.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.

The West Gray Road in the area of Pleasant View Drive was closed for hours while the crash was reconstructed by the Cumberland County’s Sheriff Office Crash Reconstruction Unit, with help from the Windham Police Department. The road was reopened around midnight.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, Joyce said, but speed appears to be a factor.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, the emergency medical workers from the Windham and Gray fire departments responded.
