A 26-year-old man was fatally shot Tuesday night in Portland’s Parkside neighborhood.

The man, whose name has not been released, was found by officers responding to a report of gunshots near the intersection of Sherman and Mellen streets at 9:45 p.m., according to police.

The man was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he later died.

Police have not said if they suspect his death is a homicide. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

Maj. Robert Martin said police do not believe there is any danger to the public and did not release any other details about the circumstances.

The intersection of Sherman and Mellen streets was quiet Wednesday afternoon and there was no sign of the recent violence. One corner of the intersection is occupied by Sacred Heart-Saint Dominic Church, which neighbors the Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services office on Sherman Street.

Many people in the neighborhood Tuesday, including employees at the nearby Mellen Street Market, said they didn’t know what happened.

Montana Mellon, who is moving into an apartment on Sherman Street, said she didn’t see or hear anything unusual, though she noticed the street was blocked off late Tuesday night as she was starting to move her belongings into her new place.

Mellon, 27, previously lived in Parkside a few years ago, and she said she’s always felt safe, although the neighborhood “does traditionally get a bad rap” compared to other parts of the city.

“I don’t know if this was a one-off,” Mellon said. “I have no idea. It could have been anything.”

Tuesday’s shooting was announced just hours before Portland police released information about another death in the city that was discovered nearly two weeks ago. The body of 23-year-old Bethany Kelley was found on Kennebec Street near Chestnut Street on the morning of Nov. 18.

Her death has been ruled a homicide, but police are not releasing her cause of death or any other details about the investigation.

As of mid-October, there had been 47 shootings and 17 stabbings in Portland, according to departmental statistics. Ten people had been shot or injured (one person was shot at and then beaten with the gun), including two people who died.

Investigators urge anyone with information about Tuesday’s shooting to call 874-8575.
