AUBURN — A fire that started in a washing machine at Schooner Estates early Wednesday night was mostly doused by a sprinkler system, fire officials said.

At about 5:45 p.m., fire crews were sent to the senior living community at 200 Stetson Road for a report that fire in the laundry room was spreading to the structure itself.

When crews arrived, they found that most of the flames had been subdued by the sprinkler system, a fire official said. Firefighters knocked down the last of the blaze and cleared smoke from the building.

Residents of the home were not required to evacuate while the blaze was being fought. The cause of the fire was still being investigated later Wednesday.

Damage to the building was mostly caused by water, an official said.
