Harold A. Spear

CANTON – Harold A. Spear, 79, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Jan. 17, 2023, three months to the day after the passing of his wife, Linda.

Harold was born on June 5, 1943 in Colchester, Vt., the second eldest son of the late Gilford Spear and Mary (Haggett) Spear. He resided in Vermont throughout his childhood and moved to Maine around Summer 1974 and married Linda A. Spear on Dec. 26, 1974 after a short courtship. He and Linda raised their family in Turner and were active members in the community before buying property and moving to Canton in 2002.

Harold enjoyed working with his hands and being outside, often with a pipe between his lips. He had many jobs throughout his life including being a farmhand, laborer and maintenance man at the following locations: Carter Grain and Feed, Chickadee Turner, Decoster’s, Nap Shoe, and Auburn school district. He was a partner in Handyman Unlimited with his son, Danny, and a member of the Turner Fire Department.

Harold enjoyed selling veggies at his road side stand and tending to his farm and domestic animals. Harold was also a big jokester and loved making people jump with his playful antics. Harold was a watcher and it was a comfort knowing that he was and is watching over his family, property and all of the local wildlife and pets.

Harold is survived by his brothers George Spear and wife Kay of Turner, Gilford “Deanie” of Hyde Park, Vt.., Roy Daily and wife Yvette of Minot, Larry Daily and wife Debbie of Minot, Bobby Pecor and sisters Betty Beauregard of Worcester, Vt., Marjorie Stoddard and husband Wayne of Craftsbury, Vt., Darlene Bishop of Hyde Park, Vt., Tina Flynn and husband Daniel of Kiln, Miss., and Kimberly “Kay Kay” Green and husband Mike of Wolcott, Vt.,; his sons Jimmy Spear of Shirley, Mass., Danny Spear of Livermore, Robin Alexander and husband Scott of Livermore, Michael Spear and wife Renee of Canton, Christopher Spear and companion Brie Landry of Lewiston; and his cherished grandchildren Heather Spear, Hunter Driscoll, Gunner Spear, Ayverrie Spear, Teagan Spear, Dalton “DJ” Spear, Joshua Spear, Keith Spear, Robert Woodbury and Alisha Spear; and great-grandchildren Payton Spear, Arlan and Zoraida Woodbury, Caleb Campbell, Braylee, Natalee and Emmalee Spear, Logan and Kaylee Prior; and several nieces and nephews. Family was of the upmost importance to Harold.

Harold was predeceased by father, Gilford Spear, mother, Mary (Haggett) Spear; wife, Linda (Arnold) Spear; and great-grandson, Michael C. Spear (infant).

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin St., Rumford.
