LEWISTON — Edward Little/Leavitt’s victory over rival Lewiston was like a broken record.

The Red Eddies boys team broke four school records in the Lesley Martin and Chris Campbell Memorial Swim Meet at Bates College’s Tarbull Pool on Thursday night.

Edward Little’s Andrew Casares, left, received the Chris Campbell Award and Lewiston’s Gabby Gladu, right, was named the Lesley Martin Award winner following the Edward Little/Leavitt vs. Lewiston swim meet Thursday at Bates College. Submitted photo

The Eddies beat the Blue Devils 123-27. The Lewiston girls edged Edward Little 77-76 in their competition.

Andrew Casares, who was given the Chris Campbell Award, had a lot to do with Edward Little’s record-setting performances.

Casares, a senior, added two individual events to his list of team records, the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly, and one relay, the 200 freestyle (1:35.56), which he swam with Chase Leonardo, Jack Martel and Gavin Holbrook.

Following the relay, Leonardo, a sophomore, set a team record in the 100 backstroke (58.41 seconds).

“So four team records (is) unbelievable. Amazing — special year,” Edward Little coach Scott Morrison said.

Added Morrison: “Chase set a team record in the 100 back that was some 30 years old. Chase had the 100 breastwork record up until last week.”

Leonardo said the final regular-season meet of the season boosted his spirits.

“I am excited for the future to see where I will be as a senior,” Leonardo said. “I am just so excited about swimming. I love swimming.”

Casares turned in winning times of 2 minutes, 2.30 seconds in the 200 IM, and 53.93 seconds in the 100 butterfly.

“I would say every race was great,” Casares said. “The two team records, individually; the relay was awesome. The 400 freestyle was really exciting to finish off the meet. We saw some really fast times from some really tired boys, but it was really fun for the coach at the end there. I was just really excited to get in a pool like Bates …”

Casares teamed up with Leonardo, Isaac Raymond and Gavin Holbrook to win the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:37.54.

“He is a pretty amazing swimmer,” Morrison said of Casares. “You know, I have been coaching EL for 21 years, and I have had some really good individual male swimmers … but to have Andrew Casares come through, by far the absolute fastest young man that I ever coached.

“So easy to coach. Such a good teammate. Again, just an amazing kid. You know, I knew he was going to be fast, but never new that he was going to be this fast.”

Edward Little/Leavitt swimmers took first in each event. Other winners were Raymond, 200 free and 500 free; Holbrook, 50 free and 100 breast; Martel, 100 free; and the team of Bjorn Sandberg, Gage Smith, Matthew Tabert and Noah Cote, who won the 200 medley relay.

Lewiston coach Troy Boutin finds it difficult to pick out any particular female athlete who stood out in Thursday’s victory.

“It is hard for me to pick out any one person,” Boutin said. “I certainly had some strong wins from Gabby Roy, Klara Cloutier — our two freshman girls. Gabby Gladu came just within a couple of tenths of qualifying for the states in the 100 fly. She really contributed.

“Amber Landry in the 100 breaststroke. We had Chloe Tremblay in the IM and the 500 (freestyle). People put in a lot of effort, and that’s why the team ended up being successful.”

Gladu was given the Lesley Martin Award.

Martin was a Lewiston swimmer who died in a car accident just after graduating in 2001. Chris Campbell was an Edward Little senior team captain when he died six months earlier.

Gladu placed second in the girls 100 butterfly, fourth in the 50 freestyle and helped Lewiston win the 200 free relay (with Brianna Letourneau, Roy and Cloutier) and finish second in the 400 freestyle relay (with Maya Gunther, Chloe Tremblay and Amber Landry).

Other girls event winners were Edward Little/Leavitt’s Jalee Boucher, 200 free; Cloutier, 200 IM and 500 free; Edward Little’s Mya Vincent, 50 free and 100 free; Roy, 100 butterfly and 100 back; and Landry, 100 breast. Lewiston’s team of Cloutier, Landry, Roy and Letourneau won the 200 medley relay, and Edward Little/Leavitt’s Boucher, Ashlyn Holbrook, Piper Bonnefond and Vincent took first in the 400 free relay.

Hebron’s Emma Frumiento, who trains with Edward Little/Leavitt but competes as an individual, swam the fastest time in the 50 freestyle and had the second fastest time in the 100 butterfly.
