Kenneth Hewitt

AUBURN – Kenneth Hewitt, 86, of Minot, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2023, with his family at his side, after a yearlong residence at Clover Health Care in Auburn.

Ken was born in Queens, NY on Sept. 2, 1936, to William and Mary (Winn) Hewitt, and grew up in Williston Park on Long Island. He graduated from Mineola High School in 1954 before attending Hofstra College. As a young man, Ken loved sports, namely baseball and basketball, and was a standout small forward on many successful basketball teams for both his local C.Y.O. and the Nassau County Police Boys Club.

Ken married the love of his life, Carmela (Masone), on July 20, 1958, in Westbury, NY, and they were happily married for over 64 years. Ken had a long, distinguished career as a Terminal Manager at Sanborn’s Motor Express in Auburn, and later in Scarborough.

An avid hobbyist, Ken’s pastimes included raising tropical fish, horses, and dogs; but his true passion was gardening. Over the years, Ken’s gardens were featured on the LA Garden Tour circuit, on the local TV news, in newspaper articles, and in respected publications such as People, Places, and Plants and Downeast Magazine. Of all his plants, Ken was most proud of his English delphiniums, and the “Delphinium Man” (as he was known by fellow hobbyists), was for a time regarded as the preeminent expert in the Northeast US on these magnificent flowers.

Ken’s deepest sports fandom was reserved for the athletic and artistic pursuits of his five grandchildren, as he attended countless games, meets, and shows over the years, and even coached several of them in AAU basketball. To this, nothing meant more to Ken than family, and we will all dearly miss his unconditional love and devotion as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Ken was predeceased by his parents; and by his sister Nancy DuCharme of Mount Sinai, NY.

Ken is survived by his wife Carmela Hewitt; his daughter Deborah Brann (Robert) of Naples, his son Kenneth Hewitt (Theresa) of Mechanic Falls; his brother Donald Hewitt (Pearl) of Kennebunk, his sister Linda Holly (Neal) of Baldwin, NY, his brother-in-law Edward DuCharme of Mount Sinai, NY; his grandchildren Michael Scully, Kevin Scully (Lewena), Marlo Hewitt-Carpenter (Michael), Daniel Scully (Kimberly), and Alexandra Hewitt; his great-grandchildren Monroe, James, Alannah, Moxie, and Rowan; and by many nieces and nephews.

At Ken’s request, there will be no funeral services. Family and friends will hold a celebration of Ken’s life this summer at a time and place to be determined.

Ken’s family sincerely thanks the staff at Clover Health Care for their kind care, patience, and support over the past year, with special thanks to Wanda, Margaret, and Valerie.
