LEWISTON — A four-run bottom of the sixth inning gave Bates College the breathing room it needed to ease to a 9-3 nonconference baseball victory over visiting Husson University on Tuesday.
John Nowak’s third run of the game, on passed ball, started the sixth-inning scoring. Jack Brennan then drove in Jack Margiloff on a fielder’s choice and Christopher Cimino brought two more runs in with a double.
Brennan and Cimino, the Bobcats’ (11-9) Nos. 1 and 2 hitters, each finished with two hits and two RBIs. Margiloff also drove in two runs.
Corbin McAlpine earned the win in relief, tossing three hitless innings with four strikeouts, after starter Teddie Nelson gave up two runs in three innings and reliever Christopher McGrail allowed another run in his two innings of work.
The Bobcats stole seven bases as a team to break the single-season program record. The 2010 team swiped 88 baes, and this year’s Bates team now has racked up 90 steals.
Hunter Curtis had one of the Eagles’ (9-10) two hits, including a solo home run in the fifth that cut Bates’ lead to 4-3. Husson used seven different pitchers, and Bates collected at least one hit off each of them.

BATES’ BYRNES TOPS IN THE FIELD: Bates College senior Liam Byrne was named the NESCAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week by the conference Tuesday.
Byrne won three events and finished second in another at the RPI Tri-Meet on Saturday.
His best tosses of 49 feet, 4.5 inches in the shot put, 175-5 in the hammer and 176 feet in the javelin earned victories in those events. His top throw of 151-3 in the discus gave him a runner-up finish.
