St. Joseph’s College freshman Tiger Hopkins was named the Rookie of the Week by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference on Monday.
It’s the second straight week the Oak Hill High School graduate has received the honor.
Hopkins racked up six goals and three assists in two games over the past week, with the Monks going 1-1 in those contests. The attacker scored four goals and assisted on two others in a win over Norwich, then tallied two more scores and an assist, plus two ground balls, in a loss to Rivier.
In his first collegiate season, Hopkins has amassed 29 goals and 31 assists. He ranks second in GNAC in assists, fourth in points and eighth in goals. He broke the program record for assists in a game with nine in a win over New England College earlier this season.
SOFTBALL
NESCAC HONORS HOLLIS: Bates College freshman Madison Hollis was tabbed as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Hollis won both of her starts last week, allowing only one run combined in the two outings. She scattered three hits and one run while striking out five in a 13-1 five-inning win over Bowdoin, then pitched a complete-game shutout the next day against Wesleyan. She fanned eight batters in the victory over the Cardinals, while neutralizing any damage from seven hits and one walk.
Hollis helped her own cause by hitting safely in all four of the Bobcats’ games during the week.
In the circle this season, Hollis has compiled a 3-2 record with 20 strikeouts and a 3.59 ERA.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
MAINE MARITIME 21, UMF 9: The Mariners (7-2, 1-0 NAC) pulled away in the third quarter thanks to an 11-2 run in a North Atlantic Conference win over the Beavers (0-6, 0-1) in Castine.
Kaya Backman scored a team-high three goals for University of Maine at Farmington, which trailed 7-6 at halftime. Ruby McMinis tallied two goals and an assist, and Emma Brown also scored twice. Kate Nowell made 10 saves in goal for the Beavers.
Hazel Stoddard netted a game-high five goals for Maine Maritime Academy. Ella Bowes stopped 13 of 22 shots to earn the win.
