AUBURN — Community members are invited to walk through the halls of Edward Little High School from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday to relive memories before it is demolished this summer.
Demolition will begin in July and the new high school at the same site, 77 Harris St., will open later this summer.
Edward Little High School opened 62 years ago in September 1961. At that time, a Lewiston Daily Sun article quoted officials saying the building was a “dream come true,” even though it lacked a gym.
The previous Edward Little High School at 30 Academy St. had grown so crowded that in its final years, juniors and seniors attended classes in the mornings and sophomores in the afternoons. Ninth graders attended another school in the city.
Auburn voters had twice turned down the project as too costly, only approving construction after the school board cut the gym from the plans and lowered the price.
The cost was about $1.7 million, which would be about $17.2 million today. A gym, the auditorium and a few classrooms were later added in 1966.
The Auburn school district will hold a community yard sale at the school June 24 to sell items which will not be moved to the new building.
