An ATV sits Monday morning beside Dingley Hill Road in Byron after crashing into a ditch. Elizabeth Wallace, 42, of Byron, was driving her 12- and 13-year-old sons to the bus stop when the ATV crashed into a ditch, tossing one son to the side of the road and trapping the mother and other son under the machine, according to Mark Latti, communications director of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
BYRON — The Maine Warden Service is investigating an ATV crash that injured a mother and her two sons early Monday morning, Mark Latti, communications director of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said in a news release.
Just before 7 a.m., Elizabeth Wallace, 42, of Byron, was driving her 12- and 13-year-old sons down the Dingle Hill Road to the bus stop on a 2003 Arctic Cat ATV. At some point traveling down the steep, paved section of the road, the ATV veered off the right side of the road into a ditch. It flipped, tossing the 12-year-old to the side of the road and trapping the mother and 13-year-old under the machine, Latti said.
No one was wearing helmets, he said.
Unable to free his mother or brother, the 12-year-old boy went down the road knocking on doors. Three men from Massachusetts who were renting a cabin answered the door and hearing the situation, got on their ATVs to get to the scene. The 13-year-old son had freed himself and crawled up to the road. The men were able to remove the ATV from Elizabeth Wallace and waited with her until emergency personnel arrived on scene, Latti said.
Wallace was transported by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center with injuries to her pelvis, back and head. Both boys were also transported to CMMC, one with a possible back injury and the other with a possible head injury, he said.
The crash remains under investigation.
The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, the Roxbury Fire Department and the Mexico Fire Department assisted with the crash.
