Tambrands has been granted a permit for a 47,000-square-foot expansion at the Procter & Gamble tampon production facility on Hotel Road in Auburn. It comes after last year’s 85,000-square-foot expansion. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal file

One year after employees at Procter & Gamble’s Tambrands tampon production plant were told about expansion plans at 2879 Hotel Road in Auburn, there’s more coming.

Auburn’s planning and permit office approved another application May 22 for a $15 million, 47,000-square-foot, two-story addition to the southwest corner of the facility. A spokesman for parent company Procter & Gamble said it’s all part of the company’s push to expand capacity at the state-of-the-art facility by adding production space, offices, conference rooms and utilities.

Last year, the company started work on a $15 million, 116,000-square-foot addition for production and warehouse space.

Since 2000, the company has invested more than $350 million in the Auburn plant.

The plant is the only production facility for Tampax brand products in North America. It also supplies product for Europe and Asia.

Procter & Gamble and other tampon manufacturers faced sporadic shortages in stores around the country in 2022. There have been no widespread reports of tampon shortages since late last summer.
