Benjamin Lowe of Lewiston, right, talks Wednesday with Gerald Patten, center, and Matthew Kershaw, left, from the Togus Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chelsea during the Homeless Veterans Mobile Stand Down at Veterans Memorial Park in Lewiston. Lowe, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, has housing but is looking for something more appropriate. Nineteen veterans registered and several others just showed up, Patten said. The purpose of the statewide event is to provide homeless veterans access to winter clothes, nonperishable food, haircuts and housing opportunities. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there were 33,129 homeless veterans as of January 2022. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
