
James A. Nicols Sr.
RUMFORD – James A. Nicols Sr., 87, died Saturday Sept. 30, 2023, at the Rumford Hospital. He was a resident of Fifth Street in Mexico.
James was born in New Brighton, Pa., on Aug. 24, 1936, the son of Arthur and Helen Nicols. He worked as a Scaler and Wood Buyer for the Rumford Paper Mill.
James was married in Rumford, on Jan. 24, 1959, to Phyllis Deanis who died in Rumford on Nov. 24, 2019.
Jim was a devoted family man, always putting family first. He loved to hunt, fish, snowmobile, and attend bluegrass festivals. He also loved going to the Allagash and passing that love of the outdoors and fishing onto his children and grandchildren. He and Phyllis traveled to Alaska six times, many of those trips were also shared with his children. grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include three sons, James Nicols Jr. and wife Carlene, Billy Nicols and wife Pam, and Scott Nicols and wife Liz, grandchildren, Kristen Viger, Tanya Arsenault and husband Steven, Ryan Nicols and wife Natalie, Nathan Nicols and wife Kelcie, Stephanie Nicols, Sarah Nicols, Scott Nicols, Cassie Viger and husband Jimmy, Angela Burgess and husband Zach, and Shawna Cormier, great grandchildren Dalton, Caleb, Piper, Dylan, Shelby Ayla and Brody, and a sister Mary Soos and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Lila, and Norma.
The family would like to thank Coco, Amy, Penny, and Chris; also, the staff at the Rumford Hospital and the staff at Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice for their care and kindness for Jim.

Funeral services will be held 12 p.m., noon, Friday Oct. 6, 2023, at the Meader & Son Funeral Home 3 Franklin St Rumford. Interment will be in the Farrington Morton Cemetery in Mexico. Friends and family are invited to call at the funeral home 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Friday prior to the funeral service.
