The Central Maine Community College women’s volleyball team clinched its first Yankee Small College Conference regular season title with three victories this week.
On Tuesday, the Mustangs defeated NHTI 25-18, 25-13, 26-24 in Concord, New Hampshire. Lewiston High School graduate Sage Cormier tallied a team-best two blocks for CMCC (9-1, 9-0 YSCC). Tiara Begishe had 11 digs and Kenzie Bills finished with 10 kills.
The Mustangs also had a pair of sweeps at a quad match hosted by Southern Maine Community College on Tuesday.
First, the Mustangs (9-1, 9-0 YSCC) faced Paul Smith’s College (11-6, 8-2), the conference’s No. 2 team. The last time the team’s played, CMCC earned a hard-fought five-set victory. This time, they defeated the Bobcats in three sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-16. Libero Gloria Seaman had 32 digs for the Mustangs, while Bills had three blocks and Cormier and Gia Cooper added two apiece.
In its second match, CMCC swept Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences 25-11, 25-17, 25-11. Seaman and Angelina Leonard served five aces each.
“I was really happy with how we played today, we did the little things right,” CMCC coach Kyle Chapman said. “We played great defense, worked really hard in transition and were able to convert that into offense. We still made a fair share of errors, but for the most part we did not try to do too much.”
WOMEN’S SOCCER
CMCC 4, SMCC 0: Lakyn Hink and Natalie Tracy scored two goals apiece as the Mustangs (7-4-1, 5-1 YSCC) pulled away from the rival SeaWolves (5-6-1, 3-3-1) in Auburn.
Hink scored the lone goal of the first half, beating Southern Maine CC goalie Grayson Soldati with 3:21 left in the frame. Soldati had denied Hink on a penalty kick early in the game.
Tracy finished off a feed from Oak Hill graduate Alexis Finn to open the second-half scoring just under 10 minutes into the period. Tracy then assisted on Hink’s second goal a tick over 14 minutes into the frame.
Tracy stole the ball from the SeaWolves defense and put it in the net to round out the scoring with 24:18 left.
Emma Knowles secured the shutout in goal for Central Maine CC.
HUSSON 4, UMF 0: Natalie Aviolla scored twice and the Eagles (9-4-1, 5-9 NAC) shut out the Beavers (5-8-1, 3-3) in Farmington.
Aviolla also had an assist. Addi Laslie and Devon St. Louis also had goals for Husson, and Lindsey Russell added an assist.
UMaine-Farmington goalie Paige Gonya made nine saves. Husson’s Madison Weigler tallied four.
MEN’S SOCCER
HUSSON 3, UMF 1: Mario Alvarez scored two goals and Josh Nadeau one for the Eagles (8-4-3, 4-1 NAC) in their victory over the Beavers (6-6-2, 4-2) in Bangor.
Edward Little graduate Mohamed Adow netted UMaine-Farmington’s goal in the second half.
