High school roundup: Dirigo field hockey wins 8th straight

WALES — The Dirigo field hockey team claimed its eighth consecutive victory by taking down Oak Hill 5-1 on Wednesday.

Grace Averill scored two goals and assisted on two more for the Cougars (10-1), who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Alyssa Ellis and Nicole Turnbull scored off assists by Averill, then Emily Woods added an unassisted tally.

Oak Hill’s Grace Behne, assisted by Izzy Whitaker, cut the deficit to 3-1 with a third-quarter goal. Then Averill capped the scoring with two goals in the fourth period.

The Cougars kept Raiders (5-6-2) goalie Sierra Lane busy with 28 shots on goal, but Lane was up to the challenge, making 23 saves. Dirigo goalie Keira Kelley stopped five shots.

EDWARD LITTLE 3, BRUNSWICK 0: Leah Thibodeau led the way as the Red Eddies (8-5) earned a win over Brunswick (2-11) in Auburn.

Edward Little scored twice — one by Helena Moon and the other by Thibodeau — in less than five minutes in the opening quarter to put Edward Little ahead 2-0. Thibodeau, who assisted on Moon’s score — added another goal, which was set up by Micah Joler, in the fourth quarter. Goalie Kasey Smith made three saves.

Brunswick’s Ella Duchette stopped eight shots and Skyler Augustine stopped one.

LEWISTON 2, CAMDEN HILLS 0: Savannah Connor-Schade’s two goals lifted the Blue Devils (5-7) to a road win over the Windjammers (4-6-2) in Rockport.

Connor-Schade scored in each half. Both were assisted by Gabby Thomas.

Lewiston goalie Sarah Mack recorded the shutout with seven saves.

Camden Hills goalie Abby Strout made nine saves, including one on a penalty stroke.

HALL-DALE 1, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 0: Brooke Michaud scored the lone goal, in the first quarter, as the Bulldogs (7-5) eked past the Falcons (4-8) in Farmingdale.

Jade Graham made seven saves for Hall-Dale, while Brooke Brown made one for Mountain Valley.

WINTHROP/MARANACOOK 10, BOOTHBAY 1: Madeline Wagner set a new program scoring during the Ramblers’ (10-2) victory over the Seahawks (2-10) in Winthrop.

Wagner, a junior, scored four goals in the game. The fourth gave her 82 career goals, which surpassed the previous program-best of 81 scored by Maddie Perkins.

After setting the record, Wagner was removed from the game and congratulated in front of Winthrop’s fans.

“Madeline is an excellent player,” Ramblers coach Melissa Perkins said, “she works hard and has taken on a key leadership role for this young team. I am really proud of her and am excited that I have her for another year.”

Wagner also had two assists.

Izzy Folsom added two goals for Winthrop/Maranacook, while Piper Clark, Kylee Mansir, Olivea Hui and Liz Roman scored one apiece. Mansir and Raegan Littlefield each assisted on one goal.

Kari Blake was Boothbay’s lone goal scorer.

BOYS SOCCER
RANGELEY 4, SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 1: The Lakers (4-5-1), led by Anthony Whittier, broke away from the Phoenix (2-8-1) during the second half in Jay.

The game was tied 1-1 at halftime, then Rangeley scored three second-half goals. Whittier led the Lakers with three goals, while Tucker Beaulieu scored one.

Jesse Lewis set up Jonathan Hines for Spruce Mountain’s lone goal. Blake Gemelli finished with five saves.

BUCKFIELD 4, CHOP POINT 2: The Bucks (12-1) overcame a half-time deficit and claimed their eighth win in a row in Woolwich against the Blue Bears (0-10).

Chop Point, with two goals by Simon Wilkinson led 2-1 after one half. Buckfield bounced back with a trio of goals in the second half.

Seamus Keough scored three of the Bucks’ goals, and Krosby Harvey netted one. Justin Lucas recorded two assists. Goalie Neil Haylock made three saves.

Elie Lemelin assisted on one of Wilkinson’s goals for the Blue Bears. Goalie Nate Sullivan stopped 16 shots.

VOLLEYBALL
MESSALONSKEE 3, LEWISTON 0: The Blue Devils (4-7) succumbed to the unbeaten Eagles (12-0) in Lewiston.

Messalonskee won the match in three sets, 25-5, 25-18, 25-9. The Blue Devils fell behind 17-1 in the second set but battled back and significantly closed the gap.

Isabella Enos tallied seven digs, an ace, a kill and an assist for Lewiston, while Aubrey Peer had four aces and four digs.

CROSS COUNTRY
KVAC MEET MOVED: The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference cross country championships Saturday will be held at Messalonskee High School.

The races were moved from Cony because its course is still unsuitable for competition.

“It’s the middle section of the course,” Cony Athletic Director TJ Maines said. “The city and our coach have been working hard to get it right, but we just couldn’t get there.”

Maines added the flooding early in the season prevented the Rams from hosting any meets this fall.

“The course never settled in,” he said. “It never came back.”

The KVAC B girls and boys races are scheduled for 11 and 11:45 a.m., respectively. The KVAC A races will follow at 2:30 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER
MARANACOOK 3, MONMOUTH/WINTHROP 0: Natalie Mohlar had two goals and an assist as the Black Bears (12-0) won in Readfield to remain undefeated.

Evelyn Stevenson also scored for Maranacook, while Cooper Davis added an assist. Keeper Devyn Eliasen made four saves.

June Foyt made 16 saves in goal for Monmouth/Winthrop (8-3-1). Two of the Mustangs’ three losses have come at the hands of the Black Bears.

MT. ARARAT 6, OXFORD HILLS 0: Elena Willis and Katherine Therriault scored in each half, leading the Eagles (8-3-1) over the Vikings (5-5-2) in Topsham.

Julianna Allen and Addison Allen added a goal apiece.
