MINOT — Town officials voted Monday to hire a land use consulting company to remedy drainage problems at Center Hill Cemetery.

The Board of Selectmen approved spending up to $7,500 on design and engineering work to address pooling water underground after rainstorms that fills up holes dug for graves at the Center Minot Hill Road site, Town Administrator Danielle Loring said Tuesday.

The town plans to hire Main-Land Development Consultants with offices in Livermore Falls and Falmouth to carry out the scope of work authorized by officials. It includes engineering and design work to create a cremation section at the cemetery, she said.

The aim is to lay out cremation plots in an aesthetically pleasing form, she said.

In other business, the board decided to invite Minot Consolidated School students to participate in naming the town’s new snowplow truck, Loring said.

The truck was purchased in 2022 and is being customized, but is expected to be ready for use in November, she said.

Students from each grade level will be asked to submit a name. Members of the board will narrow the list to a half-dozen or so. Townspeople will vote for the winner at the next Town Meeting, Loring said.

The name will be stenciled on its door or hood.

“We figured this would be a cute tradition so that the kids can be connected with our community and do something fun because kids like trucks,” Loring said.

The board also approved a contract for buying sand for winter roads but, unlike last year, had to hire a second contractor to deliver the sand. Between the two contracts with local contractors, the sand purchase and delivery will total $10 per cubic yard, which is the same price the town paid last year for delivered sand, Loring said.

The Minot Fire Department is training five new volunteer firefighters, and three or four firefighters are set to enroll in a basic Emergency Medical Technician class that starts this fall, she said.
