LEWISTON — Maria Femia played the hero for Bates College, which honored its host city before the game, then knocked off its biggest rival in a 2-1, double-overtime victory over Bowdoin in a NESCAC field hockey quarterfinal Tuesday at Campus Avenue Field.

Femia scored the game-winning goal — her eighth of the season — to send the third-seeded Bobcats (12-4) to the semifinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament for the first time in program history. Bates will match up against No. 4 Williams on Saturday. The sixth-seeded Polar Bears dropped to 10-6 with the loss.

Ella Blum opened the scoring for Bates in the third quarter, with Kate McManaman providing the assist.

Caroline Higgins scored from Maddie Mrva in the first minute of the fourth quarter to tie the game.

Kaili Jacobsen made one save for Bates and Julia Arsenault stopped two shots on goal for Bowdoin.
