RUMFORD — The Mexico and Rumford historical societies are holding A Prom Through the Ages, a benefit dance Saturday for people of all ages, including those who did not attend their high school prom.

It will be held Saturday from 6-9 p.m. in the Rumford Falls Auditorium of the Municipal Building, 145 Congress St.

Mexico Historical Society member Caroline Mitchell said the idea formed following the Mountain Valley High School prom in Rumford in May. She said she noticed on Bev Soucy’s River Valley Voice on Facebook that people were writing that they never got to go to their prom.

“So many people didn’t go to their prom, or didn’t have the opportunity to, and as a teacher of adult education this is an opportunity for something that’s good for the whole community,” she said.

It will be “an alcohol-free event because we don’t have enough of those here,” Mitchell said. “And making this a costume prom the weekend after Halloween just seems like so much fun. So dress in your best prom attire from any decade.”

Electing a king and queen is also under consideration.

She said members of the historical societies will be “somewhat chaperones.”

Mitchell will also be the DJ, playing music through the decades.

Light refreshments will be provided. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle, and donations for those are being accepted.

The cost is $20 per person and $35 per couple. Tickets can be purchased at the door or from Nghia Ha, Caroline Mitchell, and Roz Hodge of the historical societies.

Entrance is from River Street and take the elevator or stairs.
