The Hornets’ quarterback/safety/punter/kicker was announced the 2023 MaxPreps Maine High School Football Player of the Year on Tuesday, adding to his already impressive haul of honors after leading Leavitt to its second consecutive undefeated season with a second straight Class C state title.

Carpenter, a dual-thread QB, has already been named the Sun Journal All-Region Player of the Year, Campbell Conference Class C Player of the Year and a finalist for the Fitzpatrick Trophy. He completed 63% of his passes for 1,798 yards and 21 touchdown passes, and he carried the ball 121 times for 1,362 yards (11.3 yards per carry) and 23 TDs. As a safety, he recorded 110 tackles, five interceptions and forced four fumbles.

He also converted 32 of 35 PATs, and his strong leg led to some important field-flipping punts for Leavitt.

Carpenter is the second straight MaxPreps Maine Player of the Year from the Sun Journal’s coverage area. Oxford Hills’ Eli Soehren won the award in 2022.
