Doug Chipman raises the American flag Thursday on his hayfield on Range Hill Road in Poland. He installed the flagpole in the fall and keeps the flag flying, except in winds over 20 mph. “It does not need to fly in bad weather,” the seventh generation Chipman farmer said. The farm is one of the five oldest family farms in Maine; Ben Chipman settled the farm in 1781. Daryn Slover/Sun Journal
