POLAND — Police identified a local woman Wednesday who died Tuesday morning after her car collided with a tractor-trailer on Route 26.

Janelle Sperdakos, 23, of Poland died at the scene of the wreck, investigators said.

A preliminary investigation showed that about 7:10 a.m., Sperdakos’ 2018 4-door Hyundai was traveling north on Route 26 — Maine Street — when she lost control of the car and it skidded, crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a 1995 Peterbilt tractor-trailer in the area of Cyndi’s Dockside restaurant, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

Sperdakos was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

The driver of the truck, Simon Couture, 39, of Coaticook, Quebec, was not injured.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation on Wednesday. It was reconstructed by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, which was assisted by the Lewiston Police Department and the Maine State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit, a standard protocol in all fatal crashes involving a tractor-trailer.

Route 26 from Springwater Road to Aggregate Road was closed for about 2½ hours while the crash was investigated.
