LEWISTON — The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Lewiston Police Department are investigating two armed robberies of United States Postal Service vehicles Saturday.
Numerous social media posts, including at least one person with home surveillance footage, discussed the broad daylight robberies on Davis Street near Bates College and on Main Street near Riverside Street.
According to Lewiston City Councilor Joshua Nagine in a comment on a Facebook post, a neighbor who works for USPS said a male and female postal worker were victims in the incidents, but that no serious injuries were reported. Nagine referred to multiple perpetrators.
A Davis Street resident who lives close to where that incident occurred said the robbery was done at knifepoint. A Main Street resident said based on the Davis Street surveillance footage, the perpetrators’ vehicle appeared to be the same one they saw at the Main Street incident.
Nagine said Lewiston police Chief David St. Pierre is working with the Postal Inspection Service, which will provide a press release.
“LPD was sweeping the neighborhood early this afternoon,” Nagine said in reply to another comment. “ I agree, the audacity of broad daylight stickups targeting postal workers on our city streets is extremely unnerving.”
Lewiston police Lt. Derrick St. Laurent said his department is deferring statements to the Postal Inspection Service.
The news comes a day after mail, keys and equipment were reported stolen at a post office in Paris. Paris Police Department and postal officials continue to investigate.
