DEAR SUN SPOTS: Are AARP volunteers preparing tax returns this year? I haven’t heard anything about it. – Mary, Lewiston

ANSWER: AARP Tax-Aide will provide free income tax preparation services for low/moderate income taxpayers for the 2024 filing season. Beginning the week of Feb. 6, experienced IRS-certified tax volunteers will prepare and electronically file federal and Maine income tax returns.

They will work out of Sacred Heart Church at the corner of Minot and Western avenues in Auburn. The street address is 8 Sacred Heart Place.

This service is by appointment only and all ages are welcome. You do not have to be a member of AARP to use this service.

Appointments may be made by calling 513-3170 and leaving a message on voicemail. Please be sure to clearly say your name — spell it if it is a difficult one — and then say and repeat your phone number. The scheduler will call you back to set up your time.

Be sure to have all your tax information ready for the date you choose and choose a later date if you are not certain.

They will also have a person who will prepare Maine Property and Sales Tax Credit returns over the telephone if that is all you require. The scheduler will give you that contact number if it is appropriate for you.

This is a valuable service so grab a spot and take advantage of these trained volunteers.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Hiram Masonic Lodge 180 AF & AM will host a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 8-10 a.m. at 39 East St. in South Portland. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.

The proceeds will benefit the National Sojourners Chapter 92, a Masonic organization that supports Maine military veterans, ROTC, and Junior ROTC programs. Information on National Sojourners will be available at the breakfast.

Thank you for your support. — Stephen, no town

ANSWER: The thought of a pancake breakfast served in the doldrums that often accompany a February in Maine sounds good to me! I hope it’s a great success.
