DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Androscoggin Retired Educators’ Association is offering a $2,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who lives in Androscoggin County and is going to college and planning to enter the field of education.
The scholarship is awarded based on scholarship, citizenship and need. All candidates must complete and submit the following application materials: the AREA scholarship application form, an essay on “Why I wish to be an educator and need financial assistance,” a four-year high school transcript, and a letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor or school administrator.
For more information or to receive the application packet, contact your high school guidance office or Jean Roy at jroy99244@gmail.com. The completed application packet is due by March 29. — Jean, no town
ANSWER: This is a wonderful opportunity for a high school senior. As we all know, college is expensive and every little bit helps.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I need a furniture repair person. Our loveseat recliner needs to have the bottom seat core replaced on one side. The retailer that we bought it from closed a year ago due to retirement. I contacted the recliner company and they sent me the core seat with a YouTube video on how to replace it in our loveseat. Easier said than done! Can you recommend anyone that might be able to help us? — Doreen, Farmington
ANSWER: I’m putting this out into Sun Spots Land to see if a “Jack or Jill” of all trades can give you a hand with this. If you’re a Sun Spotter who can help these nice folks get their recliner back in working out, please contact me and I’ll get you together.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you give me options for getting a passport in the Lewiston-Auburn area, along with the cost? I heard there was a local college where this can be done. — No name, no town
ANSWER: Central Maine Community College has a passport acceptance office. You need to book your appointment on line at https://www.cmcc.edu/business-community/community-services/passport-services/, or contact the agent, Kelli Morris, if you need more information. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. You’ll need to have a check or money order to pay for your passport and there is an additional fee for processing.
Another location you can go to is the Lewiston Post Office at 49 Ash St. The hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday.
If you call the post office at 783-7449, ext. 1, there is a recording stating the list of documents you need to bring. The cost of a passport is $110 with an additional processing fee of $35 that goes to USPS. If you need your passport to be expedited, there is an additional fee for that as well.
If you need more locations, just say the word.
