Iannico Amaranto won the goaltending duel between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights and the Twin City Thunder on Saturday.

The Knights goalie made 34 saves in a 2-1 shootout victory in a USPHL NCDC game at the South Shore Kings Presidents Day Showcase at the Foxboro Sports Center in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Ludwig Svensson also made 34 saves for the Thunder (14-23-3, 31 points).

“The goalies played really well, I give them both credit,” Thunder coach Dan Hodge said. “Svensson played well for us and their goalie played well for them. I said in the locker room, ‘You love them when you win them, but you hate them when you lose them.'”

Andrew Piccirillo and Joonas Linnavuori scored in the shootout for the Knights (16-22-5, 37 points), while Jack MacDonald was the only goal scorer for the Thunder.

Roman Wainwright and Edvin Robertsson missed for the Thunder, but Hodge said they had good looks on their attempts.

“They have their moves and they are our go-to guys to start a shootout, Wainwright and Robertsson,” Hodge said. “The ice was a little chopped up with a couple of games on the same sheet back-to-back today. That might have changed their approach a little bit — trying to shoot it instead of making a move. Both had good looks at it.”

Both teams scored in the second period, with Yahor Ramanau giving Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 1-0 lead nearly eight minutes in.

Thunder defenseman Leo Mantenuto tied the game in the middle of the period.

“It was a good faceoff win and (Gavin) Connelly had the puck, he was walking across the blue line and Leo called for it, got it,” Hodge said. “He shot it eight inches off the ice. We talk about it all the time — keep the pucks low. It was a good shot right in the back of the net.”

Connelly and John Clay Humphrey had the assists for the Thunder.

Twin City closes the showcase on Sunday against the Jersey Hitmen at 2:30 p.m.
