ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — His final surge came up a little short, but Lewiston’s Isaiah Harris qualified for next month’s World Athletics Indoor Championships with a second-place finish in the men’s 800-meter run final Saturday at the USATF Indoor Championships.
Harris settled into fourth out of six runners for much of the four-lap race on the 200-meter track, then he took a charge at leader Bryce Hoppel in the middle of the final turn before the homestretch. Harris finished a step behind Hoppel, who crossed the line with a time of 1:46.67. Harris’ runner-up time was 1:46.78.
The two competitors qualified for Worlds, which is scheduled for March 1-3 in Glasgow, Scotland.
“I mean, goal was to make the team. I definitely wanted to win,” Harris said in a post-race interview with NBC. “Bryce is a fantastic racer … he always knows how to time his moves, right? But we keep pushing each other, and he’s making me better, I hope I’m making him better. And, yeah, we want to run it back in World indoors and hopefully bring home some medals.”
