Evan Madigan made history for the Edward Little wrestling program Friday, becoming the first Red Eddie to earn a spot in the New England Championships.
Madigan, wrestling for the first-year Edward Little program, was the runner-up in the 126-pound division at the New England Qualifier for Maine high schools held at Belfast Area High School.
He will be one of many Sun Journal-area wrestlers competing at New Englands, with the top three finishers in each weight class qualifying on Friday.
Windham/Gray-New Gloucester/Westbrook Wolfpack’s Ayden Cofone was the champion at 120 pounds, Mt. Blue’s Dillon Gray won the 144-pound class, Mountain Valley’s Lucas Libby was tops at 150 pounds, Dirigo’s Hudson Lufkin was king of the 157-pounders, and Cofone’s Wolfpack teammate Gavin Tanner took the 175-pound title. Griffin Moreau of the Wolfpack was the runner-up at 285 pounds.
Area wrestlers qualifying from the consolation bracket were Mt. Blue’s Preston Garland (106 pounds) and Oxford Hills’ Chris Levesque (215).
The New England Championships are scheduled for March 1-2 in Providence, Rhode Island.
