The Twin City Thunder could have used some momentum to close out February, and they ever-so-briefly had it in Thursday’s road game against the South Shore Kings.
However, the Kings, streaking in the other direction, grabbed the Thunder’s momentum and skated with it on their way to a 4-1 win in a USPHL NCDC New England Division contest at Foxboro Sports Center in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
After going 0-3 last weekend, the Thunder (15-27-2-1, 33 points) got off on the right foot Thursday, with Jack MacDonald giving them a 1-0 lead 2:50 into the game. Roman Wainwright and John Clay Humphreys provided the assists.
That lead lasted all of 63 seconds, as Jake Kavanagh tied it for the Kings (32-11-1-2, 67 points), who have now won four straight games and climbed within two points of the division-leading Islanders Hockey Club.
Culin Wilson, who assisted on Kavanagh’s goal, gave the Kings the lead late in the first period.
Kotaro Murase scored from Justin Ryan and Aiden Lindley 17 seconds into the second period to make it 3-1.
Ryan rounded out the scoring on a power-play goal with 1:11 left in the third period. Wilson and Nathan Stachowiak provided the assists.
The Kings were successful on their only man advantage while the Thunder were 0 for 5 on their power-play opportunities.
Jeffrey Kreidler made 22 saves in goal for the Thunder. Adam Stevenson stopped five of six shots for the Kings before being removed midway through the first period. Ryan Keyes turned away all 27 shots he faced in relief of Stevenson.
The three-game weekend series continues Friday at 2 p.m. in Foxborough.
