Calvin A. Cole celebrated the 86th anniversary of his birth on Wednesday.

Mr. Cole, or “Gus” as he is generally known by Hallowell people, conducts the oldest grocery establishment in the three Kennebec cities purchasing the store of Day and Company at that time over half a century ago and has conducted the business successfully ever since, scarcely losing a day in all these years.

It is Mr. Cole’s custom to rise early every morning and get down to the store at seven o’clock sharp and he is always the last one to leave at night.

Lee R. Fickett of Webster Road brought his curious invention to the Journal newsroom today. According to him, it will enable a fisherman to steer his boat and fish simultaneously, without problems.

The gadget attaches a fishing rod directly to the boat and locks it in place. The device is easily released.

Fickett says that his adjustable fishing rod holder can also be used to secure bicycles to autos, attach fire extinguishers to walls, and do “just about a million other things.”

“Every fisherman that I’ve shown it to thinks it’s a great idea, says Fickett. If I can’t sell it to a company, I’m going to manufacture it myself, he said.

Calling the annual Portland Flower Show just a flower show is like saying the Broadway show, “Cats” is just a bunch of singing and dancing.

A warehouse has been transformed into something out of Better Homes and Gardens and the fragrant smell of the thousands of plants and trees tickles the nose.

Maine’s lighting Depot in the Bates Mill Complex in Lewiston, featured an assortment of outdoor lighting at the show, but we’ve been involved under a different business name for many years, said Proprietor, John Plourde. “It’s a great way to promote our business and show our product to the Portland market.

“We’ve only had a small representation of our total product at the show,” said Plourde. He said following last year’s show, many people they met at the show made the trip to the Bates Mill Complex to see his full display of outdoor lighting.

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
