Carolyn Mae Nevers Baker

NORWAY – Carolyn Mae Nevers Baker, 92, of Norway passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Stephens Memorial Hospital encircled by three generations of her family.

She was born in Norway, on Oct. 22, 1931, the daughter of Harold and Aili Nevers.

She had two sisters, Patricia and Cynthia and grew up on Elm Street surrounded by the homes of several family members, including her grandparents.

Carolyn graduated from Norway High School in 1949 where she was a member of the basketball team, the glee club and the orchestra along with several other activities. She then received her bachelor’s degree in education from Gorham State Teachers College in 1953.

She married James E. Baker on June 21, 1953 and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage before his death in 2013. She and Jim earned their masters degree’s in education together, spending several summers and evenings traveling to classes.

Carolyn spent most of her decades-long career in education at the Guy E. Rowe School in Norway. She taught fourth and fifth grades, then served as a vice principal and principal. She mentored several student teachers who then became colleagues and friends.

At the time of her passing, Carolyn was the most senior member of the Second Congregational Church in Norway where she had worshipped since childhood. She participated in the bell choir for years and only recently resigned as the church’s collector. She was a member of the Eastern Star in her younger years, the MEA during her teaching career and enjoyed spending time with friends in the DKG and Oxford County Retired Teachers groups later in life.

Carolyn enjoyed camping with her family and friends. One year she and Jim took their girls on a summer camping trip around the country. After retirement they traveled to Alaska five times.

Several generations of the family would camp in Eustis at least once or twice each summer.

She also enjoyed dancing, gardening, card games and playing Yahtzee. She was famous for her brownies.

She is survived by her daughters, Pam Brodis and husband Richard of Hope, Carol Baker Roux and husband Skip of Lyman, Deb Ladner and husband Keith of Norway; grandchildren, Jim Brodis of Union, Ben Brodis and wife Amy of Hope, Becki Hatch and husband Marcus of West Paris, Sarah Ladner Apollo and husband Paul of Jamaica Plain, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Alan, Davin, Edward and Westley Hatch, Jack and Crosby Brodis and Jordan Apollo; sister Cynthia Milligan of Seabrook, N.H., sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws Patricia Thurlow, Christine Scribner, Larry Baker and Leon Baker; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, March 21, from 4-6 p.m., at Oxford Hills Funeral Services, 1037 Main St., Oxford. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 22 at 11 a.m., at the Second Congregational Church, 205 Main St., Norway.
