Looking Back and Looking Ahead — Eager visitors filled the pews of the Penley Corner Church on July 20, 1969, for Auburn’s Centennial Worship service, looking back on the city’s first hundred years. The little church, already more than three decades old when the city was formed, still stands and is now looking ahead to the U.S. Bicentennial celebration in connection with which it hopes to receive a matching grant from the Maine State American Revolution Bicentennial Commission.

On the first pleasant day in Spring, Nat Wagner, Hebron Academy teacher, took his Latin III and IV classes outside for lessons on the arching stone bridge.

The 12 scholars, ranging from sophomores to seniors, discussed among other topics, the roots of English words.

Wagner and his wife, Christy, came to Hebron two years ago to teach what some might consider obsolete languages — Latin and Greek.

The Wagners each have a master’s degree in the classics from the University of Michigan. This spring a Latin Club is springing up on campus.

A subject taught at Hebron Academy continuously since 1804 is offered in the middle and upper divisions from the seventh grade through senior years.

Last year the school established a classics library for which more than $3,300 has been given in honor of Galen Veayo, who retired in 1998 after teaching Latin at the school.

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
