LEWISTON — Will Pelc’s six goals led Bangor’s offensive domination in a 14-4 win over Lewiston on Saturday in a Class A boys lacrosse matchup at Don Roux Field.

“We had a tough thing with hockey with them,” Pelc said. “So we needed to bury them, and we got it done.”

Lewiston defeated Bangor 5-0 in the Class A boys hockey title game in March.

Saturday’s game came at the end of a tumultuous week for the Blue Devils (4-2). Longtime head coach Ben Fournier and assistants Tom and Jon Fournier (Ben Fournier’s dad and brother) stepped away from the program earlier this week.

Former JV coach Sam Cloutier is now serving as the Blue Devils varsity head coach, and on Saturday he was assisted by Lewiston Athletic Director Jason Fuller.

Pelc said he can’t take all the credit for his six goals, which were all assisted. The last three back-to-back-to-back fourth quarter goals were set up by Miles Randall.

“This is one of the first games we’ve played together,” Pelc said about Randall. “But usually when we do, it’s pretty well, and it just seemed to work out.”

Bangor coach Michael Keim said for Pelc, it’s “David versus Goliath, him against the world,” and said while Pelc is often overlooked due to his size, he has incredible skills and the “heart of a lion.”

The first quarter was slow for both teams, which ended with Lewiston leading 2-1. Nick Beaucage scored the first Blue Devils’ goal off an assist by Aiden St. George. The other was scored by Daven Langelier off an assist from Cody Dionne.

Marc-Andre Perron netted Bangor’s only first quarter goal, and Randall notched the first of his game-high five assists.

“I think we just moved the ball very well, we worked as a team,” Randall said. “We’ve had a rough past couple games, haven’t played the way we wanted. I think we all just came together.”

Randall said the difference between the Rams scoring one goal in the first quarter and five in the second was catching passes, giving all-out effort and “hitting the gas.”

“I think defense and offense worked together, really,” Randall said. “Offense would work for defense to get open on the clear, and our offense would ride the (Lewiston) defense.”

Pelc scored twice and Randall, Cole Mazzei and Phillip Moscone also found the back of the net in the second quarter, which ended with the Rams up 6-4.

Keim said it’s common for Bangor to have a large variety of goal scorers in a game.

“It’s great when you have a team offense, because in this game you can get by with two guys getting it, but when you have all six contributing, it’s harder to defeat,” Keim said. “Historically, when we’ve come down here, it’s always been a dogfight and Lewiston has been historically great on the clear.”

Keim also shouted out Ian Blackwell’s effort on the faceoff, which gained multiple possessions for Bangor, and he said Hunter Arno did a great job disrupting midfield transitions and causing turnovers as a long stick middy.

Throughout the second, third and fourth quarters, Keim said the key to Bangor’s offensive success was settling the ball, “allowing the game to come to us,” and capitalizing on opportunities to move the ball down the field. He said the Rams worked hard to move as a unit and be unpredictable.

Cloutier said Saturday was a rough game for the Blue Devils, mostly attributed to not stopping Bangor fast breaks, which the Rams were able to turn into goals.

“Things kind of spiraled out of control for us a little bit from there,” Cloutier said. “Boys worked hard. It wasn’t a matter of effort today. I just don’t think it was our day and we didn’t get the bounces that we hope to get.”

Dionne scored two of Lewiston’s four goals. Cloutier called him an offensive leader, who is able to exploit matchups once given the ball.

“Hats off to Bangor,” Cloutier said. “They did a good job on our scores and our playmakers today, so you know, it is what it is. But we’re moving forward and we’re looking forward to our next game.”

Despite the 10-point difference, Cloutier said Blue Devils goalie Brock Rancourt made several key saves in the game that prevented Bangor from going on a scoring spree early on. Rancourt made 11 saves on 24 shots, a save percentage of 46 percent.

Lewiston, which is ranked tied for eighth in the first Varsity Maine poll of the season, next plays at rival Edward Little on Tuesday. The Blue Devils handled the Red Eddies 20-7 on April 22 in Lewiston.

“I expect us to make a deep playoff run,” Cloutier said. “I think that we have the guys to do it, and after today — it’s been a been a long week for us. We’re going to hit the reset button on Monday and go from there.”
