100 Years Ago: 1924
Auburn firemen chopped down a pine tree that was on fire a short distance from Sherman’s hothouse on Lake street Thursday morning. Chopping the tree down was the only recourse the firemen had, as the flames could be put out no other way with the apparatus on hand. Cut-down near the tree was also burning and this blaze extinguished in short order. The fire is believed to have been started by boys who were berrying near-by.
50 Years Ago: 1974
Leo Castonguay of 53 Riverside Dr., Auburn, has purchased Lorette’s Flying A grocery store, a familiar landmark on Auburn’s South River Road, from Mr. and Mrs. Albert Belanger of Turner who operated the store which has specialized in fresh garden produce for more than 15 years. The store’s name will remain unchanged, Castonguay said.
25 Years Ago: 1999
A recent surprise 25th anniversary celebration was held for David and Debi Macomber at their home in East Wilton. The event was planned by their children, Brandi Lyn Macomber and Jonathan Macomber, with the help of family and friends.
