Hens have slacked away a little on laying the last week or so partly because of moulting. The sharp cold stops them a little.

The production of eggs will be rather uncertain from now until shutting up time. When the snow comes and the hens are closed in for the winter so the attendant can keep them under cover all the time and have better control over them, they lay better than they do when the days are cold and they get out on the cold ground, and “hump up in a sunny place,” to keep warm.

The Lewiston High School band marched away with top honors in every division category during the state championship at the University of Maine in Orono Saturday.

Bandleader Ray Libby said the group bested Edward Little, Wells and Sanford high schools in a sweep that included best marching band, best visual, best auxiliary and best winds.

Ray Libby said he hasn’t checked yet to see how many bands have ever swept their division in the Maine Band Directors Association’s 19-year history, but he can’t imagine there’s been many. It’s pretty exciting to think about the future and what that might hold.
