BETHEL — On Jan. 11, the Gem theater will be hosting a showing of the new film “Remember Winter”. The film was made by Gabriel Andrus, and captures the local environment and population of New Hampshire, and the beauty of winter.
After the film, a talk will be hosted by Peter Dugas, a climate advocate based out of Portland. Some of his work was covered by the Portland Press Herald back in 2021, and now serves as the Northeast regional director Maine State Coordinator for Citizens Climate Education. Gabriel Andrus will also be present at the film’s screening and for the talk afterward, to answer questions. The event is open to the public, though the Gem requests that tickets are booked in advance to ensure seating for the event.
The movie itself concerns both the winters of the past and the winters of the future, and the effects of climate change. The story of the film is told through Andrus’s trip through the state of New Hampshire, conducting interviews with locals.
It has been nominated for the New Hampshire film festival and will be shown on NHPBS, as well as at the Gem theater. The goal of the film is described on the Gem’s website as “a way of extending community conversations about climate change and its impacts on our New England traditions.”
While the film itself may not be based directly in Maine, it still covers issues that are present in our landscape today – namely the lack of snowfall. As a ski town, Bethel is especially vulnerable to these changes.
This event bears a similarity to the Gem’s ‘Dreaming Water‘ event back in October, on the importance of water and its relation to the climate. This continues a streak of Gem productions regarding the climate, and what can be done moving forward into the future.
