NORWAY — School Administrative District 17 Superintendent Heather Manchester discussed two proposed school construction projects with selectmen at their meeting Thursday.
They include building an Oxford Hills Middle School for grades six to eight and an elementary school to replace those in Norway, Harrison and Waterford for grades prekindergarten to five.
Voters in the eight district towns will decide on the projects in November, Manchester said.
The middle school has campuses on Pine Street in Paris and Madison Avenue in Oxford to accommodate grades seven and eight.
The three elementary schools serve grades prekindergarten to six.
The consolidation would send West Paris students to Paris Elementary School.
A site committee will soon unveil the location of the new middle school with an expected opening in 2029, Manchester said.
The consolidation of some elementary schools has caused some contention among the towns. No longer would all eight towns — Norway, Paris, West Paris, Oxford, Hebron, Waterford, Harrison and Otisfield — have their own elementary school.
“It will change the district,” Manchester said.
The fate of the Guy E. Rowe Elementary School on Main Street in Norway would be up to town officials, who could tear it down or turn it into a community center, housing or other potential uses.
