I write, as a 50-year subscriber, in response to the March 5 notice of changes to the paper’s delivery and publication policies, which are terribly disappointing.
First, relying on the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the paper reliably and timely is a fool’s errand.
Second, when the National Trust for Local News purchased the paper, there was a good deal of self-congratulating that local journalism was being saved. So much for that.
I urge reconsideration and propose the following alternative:
Instead of laying off loyal, local employees, shift the paper’s content to only local and state news, weather and sports, which will eliminate the huge expenses shelled out for Associated Press, your crew of syndicated columnists and other national news/opinion sources. I don’t want or need them, and there are ample alternative sources to access them for those who do.
Those savings should be ample to continue daily delivery of a newspaper I can hold.
