LEWISTON — Lewiston police officers found more than two dozen shell casings at last Friday’s shooting, which took place at Mosjidu Salaam Mosque on Bartlett Street during a Ramadan service at about 9:45 p.m., according to Lt. Derrick St. Laurent.

People fled the mosque before police arrived, with one victim being shot, St. Laurent said. The victim was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not considered life threatening. The 19-year-old’s name is expected to be released later.

St. Laurent said over the weekend that multiple people are believed to be involved in the shooting. The police department is in the process of combing through surveillance footage, which “seems to be promising,” he said. He did not give any details Monday as to possible suspects.

Police are still looking for witnesses to the incident. People who were at the scene during the shooting are asked to call the police station at 207-513-3001 or they can leave a tip or their name through the department’s tip line at 207-513-3000 ext. 3142.

“There was quite a few people in the mosque; it is Ramadan right now,” St. Laurent said. “They were having a service. We believe there were a lot of people that witnessed this.”
