AUBURN — A Peru man was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on several charges, including manslaughter, for the death of an Auburn man in an October crash, according to an Auburn Police Department Facebook post.

Albert Deschaine, 36, was indicted March 4 for manslaughter, aggravated assault, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and operation of a defective motor vehicle.

Deschaine was arrested on a warrant March 11 and posted a $3,000 cash bail for his release from Androscoggin County Jail.

On the morning of Oct. 7, 2024, first responders were sent to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Route 4 near the Auburn and Turner town lines.

Deschaine was traveling north in his 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck when his vehicle hydroplaned across the centerline into southbound traffic, police said. Deschaine’s truck struck a 2022 Toyota SUV driven by James Halliday, 78, of Auburn.

Both drivers were transported to Central Maine Medical Center. Halliday was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he would later die from his injuries on Oct. 20.

Deschaine suffered serious injuries from his ejection from his vehicle, but they were not life threatening, according to prior reports.

Before charges were filed, police determined speed and road conditions were contributing factors to the crash.
