LEWISTON — Central Maine Eye Care has announced it is closing its offices at 181 Russell St. and 249 Main St., effective May 29.

Owner and physician Dr. John Lonsdale is retiring after more than 40 years in practice, according to a notice on the company’s website, with the final day of patient exams set for May 29.

According to the notice, Dr. Troy Avery will resume the practice “after a short break” and will continue to see patients from Central Maine Eye Care. That date has not been announced, but patients are being told they will be notified when they can resume scheduling appointments.

It’s not clear if Avery will reopen in the current location, but patients are being referred to another eye care specialist or their primary care provider if there is an emergency.

Central Maine Eye Care stopped all new prescription orders for glasses or contact lenses as of May 1.
