A man was injured late Thursday night when about two tons of wood fuel pellets fell on him at Lignetics of Maine at 30 Norton Hill Road in Strong.

Strong fire Chief Duayne Boyd said by the time firefighters arrived co-workers had already dug the man out from under the pellets but had not moved him.

The accident was reported just before 11:30 p.m.

Firefighters helped put the man on a backboard to get him into a MaineHealth EMS ambulance to take him to MaineHealth Franklin Hospital in Farmington.

“I am unsure of the extent of his injuries,” Boyd said. “He was conscious and alert and talking to us.”

The pellets were sealed with plastic holding the bags on two pallets, he said.

Typically when a ton of wood fuel pellets is purchased at a store, there are 50, 40-pound bags on a pallet.

A message left at Occupational Health and Safety Administration in Augusta was not immediately returned.

An email to Lignetics of Maine seeking comment was not returned Friday.

The Lignetics plant can produce 93,000 tons of wood fuel pellets a year, according to the company website.
