Assessing agents were expected to begin the revaluation process this week in Rangeley, Town Manager Joe Roach said Monday.

Field agents from RJD Appraisals will start the process by visiting properties sold within the past three years. They will then visit other properties.

Agent vehicles will have a flashing roof light and door magnets identifying them as assessors, Roach said.

The purpose of a revaluation is to reset property values to equalize the tax burden.

According the the most recent Maine Revenue Service State Valuation Audit, the town is assessing at 76% of the market value. The audit is a comparison of assessed values and sales declaration of value. A revaluation is intended to establish valuations that reflect assessments equal 100% of the property market value.

Based on the latest state valuation, Rangeley properties are valued at $973 million.

The revaluation project is expected to wrap up in the spring of 2026.
