Hannaford Supermarkets announced Tuesday its plans to build a second grocery store at 20 East Ave. in Lewiston, putting it in direct competition with Shaw’s across the street and a Save A Lot discount grocery in the same complex.

The new store will be 51,000 square feet and will include a full-service pharmacy and offer Hannaford To Go pickup and delivery service.

Construction is expected to begin in the coming months, with an anticipated opening of winter 2027.

The company expects to employ about 150 people at the new location, which will become the company’s 189th store when it opens.

In a news release, Hannaford said it will continue to operate its stores and pharmacies at 692 Sabattus St. in Lewiston and 95 Spring St. in Auburn.
