PORTLAND — In recognition of National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, the Maine Credit Union’s volunteer program announced Maine’s credit unions volunteered a record-setting 31,349.75 hours in 2010, a 35 percent increase over 2009 totals.

For credit unions in the Lewiston-Auburn area, Community CU, which has offices in Auburn and Lewiston, finished second overall in Maine with a total of 2,526.50 volunteer hours. Rainbow FCU, which has offices in Lewiston, Auburn, Mechanic Falls and South Paris, finished fourth overall with 2,301 volunteer hours, while Five County CU, which has offices in Auburn, Lewiston and Lisbon, finished fifth with a total of 2,108 volunteer hours.

Other local credit unions participating in the program include Oxford FCU of Mexico and Norway; Monmouth FCU of Monmouth and Greene; Otis FCU of Jay; Central Maine FCU in Lewiston; Great Falls FCU in Lewiston and Auburn; and Sabattus Regional CU in Sabattus.

Since it began in 2002, Credit Unions Share for ME has documented more than 180,000 volunteer hours by credit union staff and directors.
