100 years ago,1911

BUCKFIELD — Mrs. Ella Bradeen had a narrow escape from death Tuesday morning. She is subject to severe sick headaches and sometimes gets relief by inhaling chloroform; on such occasions her daughter assists with the drug. Tuesday morning her daughter being busy, she attempted it alone and was rendered unconscious. Doctors were called and had to resort to artificial respiration to restore her to consciousness. Two or three minutes further delay would have been fatal.

50 years ago, 1961

Lewiston public school teachers are still holding new contract proposals and Schools Supt. J. Weldon Russell is wondering what’s going to happen.

The teachers are holding back because the Board of Finance did not grant them general salary increases in this year’s budget. There is no organized holdout at this time, it is claimed, although it has all of the earmarks of just that.

25 years ago, 1986

In an appeal that Code Enforcement Officer James P. McPhee said received more outside support than any he has seen in the last seven years, the Auburn Zoning Board of Appeals on Tuesday granted a variance to Shangri-la Kennels for the construction of additional boarding space.

Both McPhee and the board were flooded with letters and calls in support of Don and Brenda Weeks’ request to build a 20-by-66 foot addition to the existing Shangri-la business at 853 Washington St.
