PARIS – Christopher Wainwright is seeking reelection as Oxford County sheriff.
“For the last four years, our team has made great strides in restoring the trust and confidence of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office,” according to his written statement. “We have moved forward as an agency, and I am proud of the work our dedicated county employees and deputies have accomplished to continue the positive momentum.
“We have fully transitioned our county jail, from a 72-hour holding facility, back to a full-service operation which has saved taxpayers money. Our office is working with local organizations to combat the opioid crisis; focusing on missions where individuals seeking treatment from substance use disorders receive the services and support they need.”
Wainwright has worked for the Sheriff’s Office for over 30 years and has held every rank within the department. He has served in the United States Army for the past 24 years and had multiple overseas deployments.
In the early 2000s, he was assigned to the U.S. State Department as a police adviser in Kosovo. In 2009, he served with the U.S. Army in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, earning the National Sheriff’s Association Medal for Valor, and was twice awarded the Maine Sheriff’s Association Presidential Award for Valor.
Wainwright grew up in Canton on his family’s potato farm, Wainwright Farms. At the time, they had additional operations in South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, and primarily grew for Humpty Dumpty.
Wainwright attended Dirigo High School in Dixfield, and earned his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Central Maine Community College.
He and his wife, Erin Wainwright, raised three children in the River Valley.
