100 years ago, 1911
Two new electric lights have been installed on Court Street, Auburn, one in front of Wells’ store and the other in front of Burnham & Getchell’s drug store. The new lights have been placed on trial and it is thought that if they are satisfactory more will be installed. They are much smaller and of a different type than the arc lights, but when in operation last evening merchants along the street were much pleased with them and say that they are better than the arc lights.
50 years ago, 1961
Five new physicians have been added to the staff at St. Mary”s General Hospital.
They are Dr. Joseph J. Rando, urologist; Dr. Horacia Lichter, pediatrist; Dr. John Mendros, general practitioner; Dr. Joseph Ascoll and Dr. Horacio Erausquin, house physicians.
Dr. Erausquin has been house physician since the first of the year, but the other appointments were made July 1, according to a hospital spokesman.
25 years ago, 1986
David C. Harkins, director of rehabilitation services at St. Mary’s Hospital, has been selected for inclusion in the 1986 Edition of Who’s Who Among Human Services Professionals.
Harkins is one of over 10,000 individuals to be included in the publication, which is widely consulted for biographical information about the nation’s top human services professionals.
A native of Lewiston, Harkins holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Bates College and a physical therapy certificate from Columbia University.
