AUBURN — Finance Director Tracy Roy will give up her position in Auburn near the end of the month to take a similar position in the town of York.

City Manager Glenn Aho said he accepted Roy’s resignation at the end of the day Tuesday.

Her last day in Auburn will be Aug. 19.

“I am very happy for Tracy because she’s done a good job for the city,” Aho said.

Roy joined the city staff in February 2009. She will have held the job for two years and six months, the longest anyone has held it since 16-year-veteran Jill Eastman resigned in February 2004.

Eastman was replaced by Ron Farris in March 2005, but he resigned nine months later. Farris was replaced by Christian Trenholm, who resigned in the fall 2007. Denise Brown replaced Trenholm, taking the job in February 2008 and resigning in July of that year.

As Auburn’s finance director, Roy was responsible for producing the city’s financial reports, managing purchases, bids and keeping track of the city’s general fund.

Aho said he plans to name an interim finance director, but said he is considering alternatives to replacing Roy.

“What needs to be done now is assessing what needs we have now and what other opportunities we have,” Aho said. He could consider dividing up the finance director’s responsibilities among other city departments, contracting with an outside firm to handle those tasks or sharing financial staff with other cities or organizations.

“We have an opportunity to evaluate just what we need and what we can do,” Aho said. “That work is just beginning.”
