100 years ago, 1911

The double tenement house at 61 Shawmut St., Lewiston, owned by Dr. George W. Phillips and occupied downstairs by Victor Roberts and family, was completely gutted by fire which was discovered at about three o’clock this morning. The house was valued at about $4,000; insurance, $2,000. All of Mr. Roberts’ household goods were destroyed. His loss is partially covered by insurance.

50 years ago, 1961

A Lewiston High School freshman, who jumped the fence at Walton Field to watch last night’s ELHS-Sanford football game, was picked up by Auburn police and taken to police headquarters. The boy’s father was notified, came to the police station and provided $1 for the lad’s admission to the game. So police took the youngster back to Walton Field so he could see the game — legally.

25 years ago, 1986

GREENE — For the second time in three months, a town tax collector/treasurer has resigned.

Catherine Melanson submitted her letter of resignation to selectmen at their meeting Monday night, citing some of the same reasons for leaving the office as Carol Gagne had— principally that the job takes up too many hours and that there is a lack of needed help.

Melanson’s resignation takes effect Friday.
